The Field Barn Trust  - conserving the country's unique Field Barns and sharing them as fun and fascinating places to stay.

For hundreds of years, field barns were a vital part of this country's economy. Farmers used them for winter housing of cattle and sheep and for storing hay and animal feeds, often far away from the farm steading. Without these unique, sturdy buildings, farm animals would not have survived the long, harsh winters of the uplands and our farming history would look very different.

With all sources of traditional funding now withdrawn, our Field Barns find themselves under constant threat of decay and dereliction. They are too small for modern farm machinery - and new farming methods mean that farmers don't need them for animal or crop storage anymore. And yet these special buildings are a vital part of our heritage and our countryside. With few alternative uses and many barns being lost each year, the Field Barn Trust has been set up as a Building Preservation Trust to repair and conserve as many of these historic buildings as possible.

The Trust will undertake to care for the buildings in the long term by hand building within them an internal chamber - a cosy, warm and beautiful place in which to stay. The barns will look untouched from the outside and only when you visit will the artisan-built interiors be revealed.

The Trust aims to share with as many people as possible the magic of these special buildings and the wonder of the landscapes in which they are set - designed to protect the spirit of the place and enhance its charm and character.
